High winds can cause varying degrees of damage to structures from superficial to structural damage. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), winds over 60 MPH can cause serious damage to structures. High winds often damage roofs, windows, and doors; in extreme cases, even the entire structure. High winds can also topple trees and power lines which can even cause fires. High winds can be generated by common thunderstorms that can occur often here in Florida. Extreme sustained winds can be generated by hurricanes and tornadoes, and cause catastrophic damage to structures. Thankfully, most modern buildings are able to tolerate most wind velocities; however, wind damage still remains a serious threat.
